Missy – Welder

Missy started welding when she bought a Honda Civic and found out it needed a new floor, so she went out and bought herself a 140 MIG welder by Lincoln and got to it. She’s been in the trade for 12 years now and has some great insight:

“I do find the term ‘woman welder’ so strange though. You wouldn’t say ‘man welder’ or ‘woman doctor’ so why should it make any difference in the welding trade? It’s like putting women welders in a different category to men and it’s wrong. Trade shouldn’t be gendered. There’s still a lot of old fashioned views and stigma in the trade – but then again there have been massive improvements over the years too. When I first started welding twelve years ago, there were barely any women welders. Now there are hundreds! So it’s great to see. I’m passionate about that because so many women drop out before their welding career even starts. I’m hoping to generate more awareness around it, but it’s getting the time! I have so much going on right now, especially with the pandemic situation!”
