Stress is our body’s response to real or perceived threats. But, in our modern world, the activation of our fight or flight response is often not the solution to our day to day problems, including those in the workplace. And, no matter how organized and prepared you might be at work, at one point or another we all experience some stress in the workplace.
We know that there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution when it comes to lowering stress levels, and what works for you at one time and place, may not work for you at another. But, there are several things that you can try out when you start to feel your levels of stress increasing, let’s dig in!
- Breathe Deeply
Deep breathing may not seem like much, but it is an effective short term strategy for lowering stress levels, and you can do it anywhere!
- Breathe in through your nose while slowly counting to three.
- Hold at the top of the breath for one count.
- Slowly breathe out through your nose while counting to three again.
- Try your best to practice this exercise with mindfulness.
- Take a walk
For some, this may seem like a big task, but it can work wonders to relieve some mental stress. With a change of scenery, even if it is just a different corner of the office, can come a different frame of mind. Increased blood flow and oxygenation of your blood can offer you a little pick me up to help you feel refreshed.
- Start doodling
Now this one may sound a little bit odd, but there is a reason colouring books surged in popularity amongst adults! And, since most of us don’t have a colouring book at our workplace, just grab some scrap paper and a pen. Draw anything, get creative! Try your best to be mindful while you doodle; how does the pen feel on the paper, etc.
There are many other factors in managing stress, especially long term stress, however, keep these three quick and easy tips in mind! And who knows, you may soon find out that you’re the next Picasso!
